Thr Last Hour of Gann

The Last Hour of Gann

The Last Hour of Gann
By R. Lee Smith

Rating 5 Stars

I obtained this book through kindle and the number of pages showed 23,412. I do not know how Kindle came up with 23000 but it did. Did it feel like 23,000 YES! This may be a good thing or bad thing but for me it was very good. First I hate waiting for the next book in a series. Her books pretty much is a five book series in one, which I love!

It was her last chance:

Amber Bierce had nothing left except her sister and two tickets on Earth’s first colony-ship. She entered her Sleeper with a five-year contract and the promise of a better life, but awakened in wreckage on an unknown world. For the survivors, there is no rescue, no way home and no hope until they are found by Meoraq—a holy warrior more deadly than any hungering beast on this hostile new world…but whose eyes show a different sort of hunger when he looks at her.

It was his last year of freedom:

Uyane Meoraq is a Sword of Sheul, God’s own instrument of judgment, victor of hundreds of trials, with a conqueror’s rights over all men. Or at least he was until his father’s death. Now, without divine intervention, he will be forced to assume stewardship over House Uyane and lose the life he has always known. At the legendary temple of Xi’Matezh, Meoraq hopes to find the deliverance he seeks, but the humans he encounters on his pilgrimage may prove too great a test even for him…especially the one called Amber, behind whose monstrous appearance burns a woman’s heart unlike any he has ever known.

From R. Lee Smith, author of Heat and Cottonwood, comes an epic new story of desire, darkness and the dawn that comes after The Last Hour of Gann.

WARNING: This book contains graphic violence, strong sexual content and explicit language. It is intended for mature readers only.

My Thoughts
I loved this book. Every moment in this book seemed well thought out and very detailed. I am not someone who enjoys a lot of detail but it was very interesting because if really put you in the shoes of the MC. From looking upon an Alien and describing what you see and think to learning to live off the land. I honestly appreciated the detail in this book more then I have any other book.

I loved Amber. She was sweet, determined, and strong. I really liked her as a MC and enjoyed her fight through survival. I was unsure how I would feel about Meoraq. He is an alien who is the Chosen/Holy/Law/Judge/Can take and Have anything he wants so naturally he is big headed, however he does seek his Law and God above all choices he makes. Its a really interesting duo in a character but Smith is able to really create an Alien that I would want for myself.

In the book there are events that occur and I just do not understand. The other Humans for instance. I do not understand how in a time of survival that people do not learn and adapt or make amends  It seems the only one growing is Amber. and its her against everyone else. Nikki is a sad excuse for a human being. Skut is beneath shit and all his cult follow.

In all I loved it. I enjoyed and tried to force myself to stay up till 4am every night. I hated every moment I had to put it down.  Smith has made me a follower

Main Character: Celaena Sardothien
Personality: Strong Heroin
SubCharacters: Chaol Westfall, Prince Dorian, Princess Nehemia
Setting : Rifthold, Adarlan
Genre: YA Fantasy/romance/adventure
Review:      This book is the second book of the Throne of Glass Series.                                                                                                          If you enjoyed the first book then you will love the second book of the series.  The first book was really setting the premises of the series.  This book is filled with issues that are growing and more secrets being revealed.
The book continues where the first ended. Celaena is now the champion and assassin for the king. Already sent on several missions she continues to rebel in secret ways. The journey in this book with friends and foes is growing. Her hate/love relationships take a new twist and her friendships are tested. Chaol continues to fight his feelings and there are times you are thinking GET OVER IT! but he still holds back then tradegy hits and all you feel is heartbreak for what it could have been . Dorian continues to warm your heart even from a distance. You can't help but to love and feel sorry for him. Nehemia is ever the most courageous and determind friend. Her strenght really leads Celaena.
The one thing everyone seems to neglect is that Celaena is a trained assassin and not just any but the best. In this book everyone, even the king sees the true darkness that lingers beneath the surface
This book was amazing. The twos book out in the series right now really hit the mark in YA fiction. It has a great balance in mystery, adventure, love, jealousy, and heartbreak. Hope you enjoy it too!
Writing: really good
Romance: AWWW My GOD! Finally!
Setting : Creative
Action: Continues to Amaze
Favorite Moment “I could use the information I’ve gathered about it to bargain with the kind to let me go-or just give me a a shorter contract. Short enough that if he ever finds out the truth, I’ll be long gone.”
He growled. “He could have you whipped just for being that impertinent.” But then the last part of her words registered, hitting him like a punch in the face. I’ll be long gone. Gone. ”Where will you go?”
“Anywhere,” she said. “As far as I can get.”
He could hardly breathe, but he managed to say, “and what would you do?”
She shrugged, and both of the realized that he’s been gripping her shoulders. He eased his grip , but his fingers ached to grab her again, as though it would somehow keep her from leaving. “Live my life, I suppose. Live it the way I want to, for once. Learn how to be a normal girl.”
  “How far away?”
Her blue-and-gold eyes flickered. “I’d travel until I found a place where they’d never heard of Adarlan. If such a place exists.”
And she would never come back
And because she was young, and so damn cleaver and amusing and wonderful, wherever she made her home, there would be some man who would fall in love with her and who would make her his wife, and that was the worst truth of all. It had snuck up on him, This pain and terror and rage at the thought of anyone else with her. Every look, every word from her … he didn’t even know when it had started.
“We’ll find that place then,” he said quietly.
“What?” her browns narrowed.
“I’ll go with you.” And though he hadn’t asked, they both knew those words held a question. He tried not to think of what she said last night –of the shame she’d felt holding him when he was a son of Adarland and she was a daughter of Terrasen.

Review:      This book was a great adventure to the very end. The setting is a place where magic has been wiped out of the land by an evil king. Celeana, an assassin against the king is now in a competition to become the champion/assassin for him in hope of obtaining freedom after four years of servitude. While at the Glass Castle she encounters an evil unlike anything she has ever know and  makes friends and finds romance along the way.
The book was a lot of fun. Starting at a slave camp going along the way with Celeana  in the adventure. Everyone is afraid of a girl and they very well should be. She is the deadliest assassin in the land! The secrets and mysteries she uncovers are beyond this imagination, but not over the top. The book has a very real element of a young girl but then you also see her deadly side.
I am a sucker for hate and then love. I think it gives it more depth and meaning. The author played this angle very well and not with one but with two relationships.
One aspect I was not expecting was all the emotions I went through with this book. I found that there were times where I was angry, sad, heartbroken. This book had everything I wanted and more with a YA Fantasy / Action book.
Writing: engaging
Romance: Hate to love
Setting : Very creative and interesting
Action: Thrilling
